The chevron we searched for a long time

The detail that holds the whole together

Some materials are chosen from a sample book. Others have to be found.

For the Vinorum 1905 Residence we were looking for a wooden floor that could carry the original elegance of a Vinohrady house without playing on nostalgia. It was to be striking in its geometry, calm in its tone and natural enough to stand beside antiques, contemporary design and a statement piece found on one’s travels.

That is exactly what Chevron in the Grey Oak shade is — which we found thanks to Jan Matuška of BM Podlahy. Jan went through the samples with us in daylight, along with how they related to brass, stone, colour accents and furniture. Behind this choice lies the experience and trained eye of hundreds of BM Podlahy projects. And laying a chevron floor is itself almost a jeweller’s work – every detail and the precision of every joint shows in the result.

Our requirement for the proportion of the boards was also very specific. The six other variants we considered offered longer and wider formats, but these could have made the space look smaller and given the floor an overly dominant role. We wanted a narrower and shorter board, so that the grain of the wood would stand out, but the floor would not draw attention away from the ceiling, the furniture and the art. Now it feels balanced, the rooms do not seem smaller, and the floor naturally complements the ceiling, the furniture and the art without competing with any of them. That is exactly what we wanted to achieve.

“For a house from 1905, we were not looking for a floor that would look old-fashioned. We were looking for a material that respects the original architecture while allowing the interior to live in the present day. Chevron Grey Oak has a precise grain and a calm tone, and it can bring very different pieces of furniture together into one whole.”
